The
International House Alumni & Friends Reception was a wonderful
event. Over 100 current and past residents and friends of
the House were in attendance including the distinguished dignitaries
listed below. Dr Lincoln & Betty Lee assisted with the
program and Michael Loewenstein an ex-resident and barrister
at the Wentworth Chambers served as the Master of Ceremonies.
Thanks to the generosity of Hokari family and alumni and friends
two Minoru Hokari Memorial Scholarships were awarded this
year. The alumni selection committee of Dr John Frith, Kathryn
Viegas and Rikesh Rajakulasingham had a difficult task as
there were so many qualified candidates. After conducting
interviews the committee selected Ying Ying Liew a medical
student from Malaysia and Mimi Ho Ming Kan a psychology student
from Australia. Both individuals demonstrated a clear commitment
to the ideals of intercultural friendship and understanding
and have been involved in various community service activities
in Australia and overseas. Ying Ying and Mimi have also been
very active in IVision the International House service organization.
The award was presented by Hiroshi Manabe, Deputy Consul General
of Japan.
The Hugh and Valerie Muir Scholarship was established two
years ago by Valerie Muir. Unfortunately Valerie was unable
to attend this year but she was well represented by her daughter,
Dr Marianne Sheumack. The alumni selection committee of Professor
Ken Buckle, Anna Choy, Peter Harley and Venessa Honson had
a massive task as there were so many wonderful candidates.
The interview process was tense and resulted in the award
being given to Tet Fei Yap. Tet is an electrical engineering
student from Malaysia Vice-President and President-elect of
International House Residents’ Society and a Senior.
Tet has demonstrated a deep committed to the values of international
understanding and tolerance and he has been extensively involved
in the activities of the House. He is an outstanding academic
and recipient of a Dean’s Award. Dr Marianne Sheumack
presented the award to Tet.
We have some wonderful photos of the event and I will notify
you as soon as they are on our website. In closing let me
remind you that next year’s Alumni & Friends Reception
will be Saturday 3 November 2007.
We look forward to seeing you next year!
